I’m reading Roxburgh’s book Introducing the Missional Church and he provides a five stage process to lead a congregation through change to a missional model of ministry.  The five stages are:

  1. Awareness
  2. Understanding
  3. Evaluate
  4. Experiment
  5. Commitment

I think that these five stages is very important.  The first brings about an awareness of what is happening outside the church walls.  The second is to seek to understand what God is doing in the neighborhood where the church can join in.  The third is to evaluate if what they are perceiving is correct.  The fourth step is to reach beyond themselves a little and experiment with some new procedures in “doing church.”  The final step is to commit to these new adventures and to see how God uses them.

I’ve been a part of a church working through these steps.  I remember going through the first step and a little of the second but I do not remember getting much beyond that.
